Finding a needle in a research haystack
Contained within the vaults of the Idaho National Laboratory's Research Library is a rich trove of scientific studies and reports that date nearly as far back as the 60-year-old laboratory itself. When the Scientists and Researchers across the Department of Energy complex asked for this wealth of information to be made available electronically, the INL called upon TAProc Inc. to provide the solution.
The result is the award winning Needle Search Platform. Simultaneously searching and categorizing results from many disparate sources, the Needle technology enables researchers to comb through vast amounts of information all consolidated into a single interface. This federation of sources eradicates the laborious task of manually searching separate databases and collections individually.
When the power of the search platform became apparent, it quickly spread to other organizations, becoming the federated search platform supporting the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and later integrating into the INL internal business portal.
Due to the overwhelming success and rapid proliferation, the Needle development team was awarded the Department of Energy "Award of Excellence" at the 2010 Information Management Conference in San Antonio, TX and later received the "Computerworld Honors Program - Laureate Award" in 2011.
